More info: our charter

The Society of Friends of Strasbourg Cathedral was founded, as the Strassburger Münster-Verein, on 9 July 1902 at the instigation of Johann Knauth (1864-1924), architect-in-charge at the Cathedral Workshop Foundation, who saw this as a way of encouraging donors to help fund the repairs needed to stop the spire from collapsing – a very real danger at the time.

Our society is run by a dedicated team of unpaid volunteers. All members are cordially invited to get actively involved in the life of the Society, e.g. by taking turns to man our once-a-week help desk for members and non-members who want to know more about our work.

The Steering Committee is elected by members and by representatives of the various bodies officially responsible for managing and maintaining the Cathedral. It meets regularly to plan the Society’s activities, and comprises several sub-groups (Bureau, Reading Committee, Cultural Activities Committee, etc.). Francis Klakocer has chaired the Steering Committee since 2022.
